Noble Quest progress, and a hilarious photo of ME.
Noble Quest...
Words today: 2,203!
Words total: 30,421
Reason for stopping: Sleepy.
Favorite: I'd needed to build a brown castle for about two hours by the time we stopped to make camp. When I finally got away from water-gathering, wood-gathering, and listening to Jint reminisce about his duty tours through these very foothills, I'd almost forgotten about the darklings and their tricks. I mostly only remembered that my body weighed about two pounds more than it ought.
Abusing my power: I guess mostly I just made you read about poop, which isn't really standard for a quest fantasy. But it should be. Think about it: the hobbits eat six times a day, and they actually stop pooping long enough to complete any goals?!
It's aliiive!: Jint has been in these dangerous mountains before. (He seems to be the pet for this section of the book.)
Embarrassment: Homeland Security probably knows I was looking up "medieval toilet paper." (And I didn't find much detailed information, so if you have info, do share!)

This is my fashion model face. It's how I imagine people look
after they've puked up a $85 entrée from a trendy urban restaurant.

..."medieval toilet paper." (And I didn't find much detailed information, so if you have info, do share!)

Leaves, as far as I'm aware. Or nothing. The Romans had reuseable sponges, but I don't think that carried over to medieval times. Definitely not paper.

I have a character who was probably using nothing, since he lived in the city, and now he's out in the woods, and I suppose now he'll use leaves!

I'm going to have so much fun talking about how it used to get stuck under his fingernails and how cheered he is that it doesn't anymore. Hahaha.

I'd needed to build a brown castle for about two hours by the time we stopped to make camp.

That is the best euphemism for pooing I've ever heard.

Hahaha! Until that one popped into my brain, I was having trouble--all the crude things I could think of were too modern.

I've heard of cornhusks being used thus, though I have no idea how accurate that is. Leaves too, though my inner sadist claims that if you go with those, an incident involving a character with botanical ineptitude and some poison ivy may be in order.

Fantasy in general has a deficit of... pretty much every bodily substance other than blood, now that I think of it. This must be remedied. >:|

maize is a new world food, so europeans certainly wouldn't have been using corn husks until at least the 1500's.

I would, too! But I already did something worse in the same area, so poison ivy would be anticlimactic. However, I think I'll make it look like he's going to a few times, just to keep us on our toes.

LOL. I must confess while I love the top it looks way too itchy to actually wear! Kudos to you for resisting the urge to scratch, scratch, scratch! :-P

I thought that when I first saw it, but there's actually a nice nylon lining that feels a little like silk, and you can't feel the sequins at all!

I seem to recall (and Wikipedia seems to agree, for what it's worth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thimbleberry) that thimbleberry leaves were used by Native Americans as toilet paper because the fine hairs on the leaves make them very soft. They're also palm-shaped, so their geometry is conducive. Also, thimbleberries are close relatives to raspberries and blackberries and they were an important food source. So your character could get a snack in a pinch and take care of business right afterwards.

Hey, thanks! :D And even though they're in another world, the terrain is such that I can easily excuse the presence of thimbleberry.

...OH MY GOD. I just got the most hilarious idea. THANK YOU :)

Sadly, it's never Watch Venture Brothers With Me Bear. It's always Selfish Fellatio Bear or Let's Share AIDS Bear.

Of course, the woods setting opens up the possibility of a full range of encounters with flora and fauna.
