Workshop & Weakly Story Club 2009.003

Eileen Gunn presented "Wit and Tragedy: Writing the Savagely Funny Story" today to fifteen eager participants, one of whom was me! It was fantastic. We had a little bit of confusion when it came to printing out our stories, and some people didn't read the course requirements so we had to try and read their photocopied handwriting, but for the most part it went very smoothly. We had a great group too--people who'd never workshopped before caught on quickly, partly due to Eileen's excellent direction. Everyone was very intelligent, analytical, and positive. I'm excited to have met everyone!

Through Eileen's examples and designed exercises, we learned the difference between writing something funny because it has a punchline, something funny because it's trivial, something funny because it's true, and something that's funny because it's futile, among other types of funny. More importantly, we learned how to shift the same story from one type of humor to another. And perhaps most important of all, we examined at length the elements of wit and tragedy that appear in our writing unconsciously if we simply choose to write about something that actually matters to us.

I recommend taking a class with her if you get the chance.

Now, about me me me. I wrote something I liked and I wasn't disappointed by my the reactions of my classmates (thanks you guys, you made me feel awesome!), but I'm not sure what to do with it. It's an exaggerated, compressed version of several experiences I had in high school. And I wrote it this week, so...

Title: Making Friends
Length: 400 words (I know, I know! But I paid for the lack of length with emotional veracity. And panic.)
First paragraph:
I didn't have a great relationship with the stairs at my high school, but I had a close one. We knew each other intimately. I knew the impact of all the corners and edges, and the stairs knew my elbows, my ass, and entirely too much about my face.
